From Bathroom Brooders to Big Life Changes: My Wild Update!

From Bathroom Brooders to Big Life Changes: My Wild Update!

Hey there, amazing humans!

It’s been a while—my last blog post was way back in July 2024, and wow, so much has happened since then! For starters, all of Scout’s adorable puppies found wonderful, loving homes, which makes my heart so happy. One of them, Sadie, went to our dear neighbours, so we still get to hang out with her often (bonus puppy cuddles!). And one little pup stayed with us—Jemma. She was such a bright light in our lives, and losing her to cancer at just one year old was heartbreaking.

Now, onto the farm chaos! My tiny bathroom has been home to 10 baby chicks in a brooder (yes, you read that right!) and 9 quail—it’s been a full-on feathered takeover! Honestly, brushing your teeth while being watched by 19 tiny birds is an experience I never thought I’d have. The good news? This weekend, I’m finally moving them outside so they can enjoy the big wide world. Outside, four of my hens decided to join the fun and hatch their own babies, so now we have 13 new chicks roaming around. That brings my poultry total to 29 feathered friends! And because I can’t resist, ducks might be next on the list. Why not, right?

Speaking of outside, we had some horrible winds about a month ago that blew our chicken coop over! But did that stop our diligent hens? Absolutely not. They made a nest and kept laying eggs for us anyway—talk about commitment!

Among all these fluffy additions, I’ve got one funky little chick who’s stealing the spotlight. I’m still toying with names—Rocky is a strong contender. What do you think?

On a more heartfelt note, this year has brought some tough goodbyes. Earlier this year, I also said goodbye to my cat of 18 years. Those losses left a big hole in our hearts. But life has a way of bringing joy back—we’ve welcomed a gorgeous, crazy, and completely lovable kitten named Sugar, who’s been keeping us on our toes.

And speaking of joy, I’ve got another exciting update—I’m now auntie to not 7 but 8 crazy kiddos! My sister and her husband recently welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world. They’ve moved from Brisbane to live locally, which means I get the amazing opportunity to be a hands-on auntie to one more little human. My heart is so full!

Work-wise, I’m still in full-time administration, which comes with its own challenges, but I do love a good challenge! And as we roll into the silly season, expect to see Emalyn popping up at more community events and markets. I’m so excited to reconnect with you all in person.

Thanks for sticking with me through all the ups and downs. Your support means the world, and I can’t wait to share more adventures (and maybe some duck pics soon!).

I’m swapping chicken chaos for mountain trails! My next post will be all about my hiking trek through the Overland Track—six days of breathtaking scenery, muddy boots, and a few unexpected adventures along the way. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to tackle one of Tasmania’s most iconic hikes, stay tuned!
